Been awhile...

Hi there, it’s probably been a while since you’ve heard from me (and if you haven’t heard from me before this, thanks for tuning in). I am starting this blog because I have decided as of late that it’s time I get back to sharing my music with the outside world, even if only a few people will ever hear it.

It is my hope that by putting my thoughts out into the void, I can work through some of the mental blocks I have around releasing my music.

I have been thinking about the past lately (as I often do), specifically 2015/2016. Back then, I was writing and recording a lot of new music, and I would sometimes make an entire song and release it to SoundCloud all in the same 24 hours. There was something about the simplicity of that process that I loved at the time. It allowed me to fend off my perfectionistic tendencies and accept the most raw version of my art.

I found that by releasing a track right away when the energy was still fresh and new, it “flowed through the airwaves” better, and was more relevant/relatable.

I’d like to get back to this a little… but I’m conflicted. I still write and record new music fairly often, but I sit on the tracks I’ve made for a long time, sometimes many years, and I don’t typically release them. There are many complex and competing internal reasons for this (which maybe I will start to unpack here as I write more), but I think one reason is simply because I consider great art to be much the same as a fine wine; It should get better with time.

By sitting on a song for a while before I release it, it gives me insight into how it will actually age over time, and if I’ll be able to listen to it years later without cringing super hard.

All this is to say… it’s time to open up the vault. 🔏 For too long I have sat on these songs and let them age. For too long I have tweaked and refined them and perfected them to death. It’s time to let some of them go, one by one, out into the world.

So I built ylsound… you’ll see that the music functionality is closely modeled after the main streaming services such as Spotify/Apple Music so it should feel familiar to use. You can stream my entire existing discography directly from here, no subscription or account required.

It is my belief that this will change my relationship with releasing music significantly. Since I am now in full control of the publishing process, from start to finish, I can drop a track whenever I want, directly to this site. It also allows me to make small tweaks to artwork or songs as needed.

I also created a newsletter, so if you subscribe to The Late Night, you will be notified the moment I post anything new (be it a song, album or blog post).

This gives me the freedom and flexibility I had back in 2015/2016, without being dependent on any external platform or service to publish my art. It also allows me to release special alternate versions of tracks, or rough/uncut/experimental songs as I make them, giving you a sneak peak into my processes, and I get to share some additional info about each track as part of the release.
